Mishima - Modern Noh Plays

In 2019 we were invited to the MUSE Festival in Queens, NY to present a full production of two of Yukio Mishima modern Noh plays, Aoi No Ue and Hanjo.
In the 1950’s Mishima wrote a series of plays rooted in the 14c traditions of Noh drama, but set in Twentieth Century Japan. Like the ancient Noh plays, they feature vengeful ghosts and jealous spirits and explore love, madness, loss, and the not-knowing if something is reality or a dream.

We were pleased that the audience included members of the Japanese ex-pat community and their children, Japanese students living in New York, and English-speaking students, scholars, and curious theater-goers.
